Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 Common Core Standards: RI , SL Aim: How can we identify and analyze the structure and central ideas in “A Quilt of a Country”? Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze “A Quilt of a Country.” Agenda Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains share with the class. Discussion/Sharing #1: Share the Madlibs for each paragraph! Paragraph 1: America shouldn’t exist because we have diversity. America is created like a quilt Paragraph 2: America has many stories of discrimination against diverse people so it’s shocking that we can create unity Paragraph 3: America has conflict between community and individualism. People segregate themselves based on background Paragraph 4: Even though we have conflict based on discrimination and hostilities, we stay united Paragraph 5: Diverse people have united against enemies during devastating times Paragraph 6: The U.S. is unique because it embraces diverse people Paragraph 7: Today’s immigrants are not so different from the immigrants of the past because all of them worked hard and their kids are successful. The only thing that has changed is their backgrounds Paragraph 8: During tragic times, like 9/11, people tend to have a sense of national pride, which is called patriotism. Even though America was an improbable idea, it has become a united nation. Discussion #2: Discuss and share the answers to the review questions handout. Puzzle/Reflections: Complete a puzzle to prepare for tomorrow’s exam. Do we understand the structure and central ideas in “A Quilt of a Country”?
