1 Types of Writing Narrative—The telling of a story. Events are related to the reader in a specific sequence. Persuasive—Writing that presents reasons and examples to influence action or thought. Expository—Writing that seeks to explain, illuminate or 'expose‘ information. Descriptive—Writing that “paints a picture” for the reader. Provides details about something.

2 Active and Passive Voice
Active Voice—The subject of the sentence is carrying out an action on a receiver. EX: The soprano sang at least one tune from a well-known opera. Passive Voice—The subject of the sentence is having an action carried out on it by a doer. EX: At least one tune from a well-known opera was sang by the soprano. *Doer, Action, Receiver

3 Determine if these sentences are Active or Passive
Determine if these sentences are Active or Passive. If Passive, change them to Active. The man must have eaten five hamburgers. The letter was mailed by Marilyn. Colorful parrots live in the rainforest. A suspect was questioned for sixteen hours by the police.

4 Transitive and Intransitive Verbs
Transitive Verb: Expresses an action that passes from a doer to a receiver (direct object). EX: James hit the ball. Intransitive Verb: Expresses an action that has no receiver (direct object). EX: The flowers withered over time.

5 Determine if the verbs are Transitive or Intransitive
She sang a lullaby to the crying baby. Jim napped on the couch after school. Larry tripped as he ran around the track. Jenna carried the bag all over the mall.
