Deposition 6th Grade Earth Science October 2017

What is Deposition? The dropping of sediment out of the wind, water, ice, or gravity and settling in a new place.

DELTA

DELTA *A delta is a landform that is created at the mouth of a river where that river flows into an ocean; fan-shaped or finger-like shape (or sea, estuary, lake, reservoir, flat arid area, or another river.) Deltas are formed from the deposition of the sediment carried by the river as the flow leaves the mouth of the river in smaller channels called distributaries. *Agent – water ml

Deltas

Barrier Island

There is a supply of sand sufficient to form islands;
Barrier Islands are formed when coastal sand is organized and when three conditions are met: There is a supply of sand sufficient to form islands; sea level is rising; and there are winds and waves with sufficient energy to move the sand around. *Agent? Water

Barrier Island *Barrier islands are long, narrow, offshore deposits of sand or other sediments that parallel the coast line. Some barrier islands can extend for 100 miles (160 km) or more. The islands are separated from the mainland by a shallow sound, bay or lagoon. Barrier islands are often found in chains along the coast line and are separated from each other by narrow tidal inlets, such as the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Barrier islands are popular vacation spots, including resort communities from Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Miami Beach, Florida.

Barrier Island in Ga., called Cumberland Island

BEACH

BEACH Beaches form as waves deposit sand and other sediment on the shore and wind pushes these sediments inland. Agent? Water

MARSH in GA.

Marsh A marsh is a wetland that is dominated by grasses rather than trees. Marshes can often be found at the edges of lakes and streams. Agent? Water

RIVERs

Rivers *It can also form from runoff of heavy rains or snow melting from mountains. Rivers can start off small and get wider when different streams merge. It is formed by erosion. *Agent? Water Rivers start as very small streams and gradually get bigger as more and more water is added from heavy rains and spring meltwater.
