2 Monday AGENDA! Get a new piece of paper for this week’s Flashbacks.
Write your name, class #, and Week 6 Flashback: What does it mean to “show versus tell” something in your writing? Bell Ringer: Rewrite this sentence using ”Show Versus Tell”. I was nervous to answer the phone.

3 ANSWERS FLASHBACK: ”Show Don’t Tell” means the writer uses the 5 senses and imagery to write descriptively so the reader gets a picture in their mind. BELL RINGER: (Answers will vary) The familiar bbrrrriing of the home phone clanged in my ears. My heart started racing as I slowly reaching for the receiver. My palms started sweating. I felt my hand resist as I reached and pulled it up to my ear. “Uuhh Hello?”

8 Tuesday AGENDA! Flashback: What do you do to indicate that a new speaker is speaking in dialogue? Bell Ringer: My mom and I argued. (Change this to three lines of dialogue)

9 ANSWERS BELL RINGER: (Answers will vary) ”Mom!” I screamed loudly. “What? I’m in here,” she called from the laundry room. “Why can’t I go over to Jim’s house?” “It’s a school night,” she retorted calmly. “But that’s not fair,” I yelled in response. FLASHBACK: Every time a new speaker starts talking, you indent and start a new paragraph.

Flashback: What punctuation must be with dialogue in order for it to be grammatically correct? Bell Ringer: Punctuate the following dialogue: Mom I don’t want to clean my room I yelled because I just did yesterday

13 ANSWERS FLASHBACK: Dialogue must have quotations in order to indicate that someone is speaking. BELL RINGER: “Mom, I don’t want to clean my room,” I yelled, “because I just did yesterday!”

16 Graphic Organizer BRAINSTORM
When you are finished with your Graphic Organizer, be sure it is in your Narrative Folder Then begin writing out the PLOT of your story on the Prewrite Plot Diagram. If you finish, read silently.

17 Thursday AGENDA! Flashback: What is imagery?
Bell Ringer: Look at the primary source that begins the chapter on page 54. What do you think it means by “I smelled the breath of death for the first time…”?

18 ANSWERS Flashback: Imagery is writing that appeals to our 5 senses and uses vivid language to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Bell Ringer: The quote could be foreshadowing the fact that someone Mattie loves will come so close to death that she will experience fear of death.
