7 What do the following sentences from the exercise have in common? Shes the best friend who/that anybody could ever have. Ive lost the new pen which/that I bought this morning. Dont tell anybody who/that you meet where I am. We decided to go to a restaurant which/that we had never been to before. The magazine which/that you lent me has some very good articles in it.

8 In each case we can OMIT the relative pronoun WHO, WHICH, or WHAT. Shes the best friend anybody could ever have. Ive lost the new pen I bought this morning. Dont tell anybody you meet where I am. We decided to go to a restaurant we had never been to before. The magazine you lent me has some very good articles in it. Why is this possible?

9 Each of these relative clauses begins with a new subject, so the relative pronoun is not necessary to make the sentence clear. Each sentence has an equal number of subjects and verbs. Shes the best friend anybody could ever have. Ive lost the new pen I bought this morning. Dont tell anybody you meet where I am. We decided to go to a restaurant we had never been to before. The magazine you lent me has some very good articles in it. This should be clearer if we consider a sentence where omission is not possible. All the people who have met him say hes awful has two subjects and two verbs. All the people have met him say hes awful has one subject and two verbs and is confusing.
