3 What is a Contracture? A contracture is a change to a person’s ability to move their joints and limbs freely. This can lead to permanent deformity, disability and pain that has a significant effect on their care needs and everyday life. It is VITAL to identify such changes to prevent them from occurring

5 Why do Contractures Develop
When people don’t move or are not encouraged to move often enough When people remain stationary in their bed or chair for long periods When someone is unable to move on their own (following stroke, injury, surgery, dementia) Poor positioning or support in their bed and/or chair
