Gravity: A Force and Motion
Chapter 5 Lesson 2 Gravity: A Force and Motion
2
Gravity Gravity- a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses All matter is affected by gravity because of mass Gravity is a result of mass The Earth’s gravity must be overcome for an object to move
3
The Law of Universal Gravitation
Law that was designed by Sir Isaac Newton Law of Universal Gravitation describes the relationship between gravitational force, mass, and distance Part 1- Gravitational force increases as mass increases Part 2- Gravitational force decreases as distance increases
4
Law of Universal Gravitation
5
Weight is a Measure of Gravitational Force
Weight- a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object Weight is measured in Newton (N) Mass- the amount of matter in an object, its value does not change Mass is the same everywhere; weight changes with location
6
What Keeps Objects in Motion
Inertia- tendency of of object to resist change in motion Newton’s 1st Law of Motion- All objects will stay at rest or stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force Planets orbit the sun due to 2 factors- inertia and gravity
