RECAP OF OUR LAST STUDY From our last study, entitled “Vision for Missions”, we learnt that Jesus died for the whole world. God wants all to be saved. God expects every Christian to be a missionary directly or indirectly. God commands us all to seek the lost, far or near, through missions. Believers are saved to serve and should make great personal sacrifices to reach out to the sinners. A missionary must be committed to God, His cause, His word and the church. To neglect missions is to court God’s frown.

TODAY’S STUDY: LESSON 727: FOLLOW-UP AND DISCIPLESHIP
MEMORY VERSE: …… “And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.” (Acts 15:36). TEXT: Acts 14:21-28; 15:35,36,41
14
QUESTION 1: Explain what is meant by ‘follow-up’.
INTRODUCTION Follow-up and discipleship are key elements of the Great Commission. Christ commanded us to “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” Our duty is not limited to winning souls; we should teach, train and care for them until they become mature enough to teach others. Follow-up is an essential part of Church planting. Its goal is to develop and conserve new converts through consistent exposure to the word of God. QUESTION 1: Explain what is meant by ‘follow-up’.
15
NECESSITY OF FOLLOW-UP Acts 15:36; 14:21-22
New Christians need the milk of God’s word to grow and mature. It is the responsibility of the soul-winner to feed these ‘lambs’. Follow- up takes time, attention and love. The soul-winner should visit, instruct, encourage, help, counsel, pray for and offer every needed help to conserve, mature and integrate each soul won to Christ. Every believer is called to be a soul-winner. QUESTION 2: Why is follow-up very important to Christ and the Church? – Acts 14:21-22; Proverbs 11:14; Luke 22:31-32
16
METHODS OF FOLLOW-UP Philippians 2:19-22
Jesus kept His converts, taught them the word of God and trained them on various methods of evangelism. Paul used a number of methods: One, personal contact. Proximity to converts ensures their spiritual safety. Two, intercessory prayer; Jesus prayed for Peter while Paul prayed for new believers. Three, personal representatives can be sent to minister to new converts. Paul sent Timothy and others. And four, writing letters to encourage, guide and admonish new converts. We can send s, SMS, WhatsApp messages, etc.
17
ESSENTIALS OF FOLLOW-UP 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8,11
Follow-up entails: One, teaching converts how to live a victorious life in Christ. Two, guidance on how to maintain daily quiet time and a vibrant prayer life. Three, encouraging them to share their testimony of salvation with others. And four, emphasizing the importance of attending church services regularly. Once salvation is ascertained, the convert should be enjoined to be baptized. QUESTION 3: Why is it important to baptize new converts as soon as possible? – Matthew 28:19; Acts 8:36-38
18
CHURCH GROWTH THROUGH FOLLOW-UP AND DISCIPLESHIP Acts 11:25-36
Follow-up and discipleship training help Church growth. Members will be equipped for the task of rapid evangelization and pastors will be raised to lead new church locations. Furthermore, follow-up leads to multiplication of disciples. If each of us wins a soul every six months and trains that soul to win another soul, we will evangelize our communities within five years. QUESTION 4: What are the benefits of follow-up and discipleship? – Acts 19:9-10; 2 Timothy 2:2
19
CONCLUSION The mission of evangelizing our communities and church growth can only be realized through consistent follow-up and discipleship. It takes time, attention and love to follow-up and mature new converts. Every believer should make it a priority to guide converts through the word of God and prayer. If we are faithful in doing so, we will have a bountiful harvest of souls.

HYMN NO OTHER PLEA (GHS 23)
30
NO OTHER PLEA [GHS 23] My faith has found a resting place,
Not in device nor creed; I trust the Ever living One, His wounds for me shall plead. 1.
31
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
32
NO OTHER PLEA [GHS 23] Enough for me that Jesus saves,
This ends my fear and doubt; A sinful soul I come to Him, He’ll never cast me out. 2.
33
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
34
NO OTHER PLEA [GHS 23] My heart is leaning on the word,
The written word of God, Salvation by my Saviour’s name, Salvation through His blood. 3.
35
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
36
NO OTHER PLEA [GHS 23] My great Physician heals the sick,
The lost He came to save: For me His precious blood He shed, For me His life He gave. 4.
37
I need no other argument, I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me. END OF HYMN
