History Descendants of the Blackfeet, Kainah, and Piegan tribes.
Blackfeet refers to the black color of their moccasins. 1800s white settlers began entering Blackfeet territory.

Blackfeet wanted to start a trade network with the white settlers to gain metal tools.
Horse and gun revolutionized the Blackfeet culture. Blackfeet had the reputation of being strong warriors.

1851 Fort Laramie Treaty set-aside land for the Blackfeet Reservation.
, Blackfeet boundary was moved 200 miles north by federal government. Winter of unsuccessful buffalo hunts.

After disappearance of the buffalo, the Blackfeet faced starvation and were forced to reservations.
1888, more land was taken from their reservations and boundaries created 3 separate reservations.

1896 federal government wanted to purchase the Rocky Mtns.
Glacier Nat. Park and Lewis and Clark Forest was sold to the government, but is still being debated. The Blackfeet Indian tribe is both a political entity and business corporation.

Unemployment is a major problem with 60-80% of the people unemployed.
North American Indian Days Celebration is the major festival of the year.
