1 DfE / Safer Choice SFIREG Meeting June 1, 2015 Diane Boesenberg
Director, Regulatory & Government Affairs RB

2 The Need for DfE / Safer Choice - Pesticides
The US EPA Safer Choice program is extremely important to registrants There are demands from: Consumers Retailers NGO’s State and professional preferred purchasing programs They demand products that are “Greener” with no compromise on cleaning and antimicrobial efficacy

3 The Need for DfE / Safer Choice - Pesticides
“As of December 31, 2010, nine states have passed legislation requiring the purchase and use of green products. New York, Illinois, Connecticut, Maryland, Hawaii, Nevada and Iowa require green cleaning in K-12 schools. In addition, Illinois and Iowa, along with Vermont and New Jersey require green products in state government buildings. Required products vary by state, but most bills cite specific criteria for chemicals, floor care products, soaps and paper.” For RB, professional customers understand DfE (Safer Choice) and “green” cleaning is a demand. For example: food service, long term care and hospitality demand products be “green” and are DfE (Safer Choice) certified. Professional customers prefer DfE since they are aware of the partnership with the EPA

4 A Retailers Part of the Equation - Pesticides
Formulation Challenges Limited ingredients / Time / Cost A 3rd Party review is required Safer Choice program review EPA Antimicrobial Division review and approval State approval

5 A Retailers Part of the Equation - Pesticides
The plan to use the Safer Choice pathway takes commitment on the part of the registrant The timeline to put a product on the market is long R&D product development years 3rd Party + Safer Choice reviews approvals 4 – 6 months* Federal EPA review and approval 6 months Development of the label weeks State label submission and approvals 9 months *This is additional time to how long a typical product registration will take

6 What do we know? We know that:
There is a drive / need for “greener” chemistry Companies are committed to working toward this We are looking for State Agencies to help make this process work Approval for the current DfE logo is a key first step We can work toward a Federal / State / Industry aligned program for Safer Choice for pesticide products
