TERM: Reflective Writing
A short piece of nonfiction that presents a writer’s views on a personal experience or idea. This type of writing is a primary source—an original source of information. An essay writer may use a variety of techniques to provide support, depth, and context to the ideas being discussed. We will focus on the following: Description Diction Syntax Tone

TERM: Description Language that includes:
Imagery: Language that appeals to the five senses Figurative Language: Language not meant to be interpreted literally, such as similes and metaphors.

TERM: Diction The words the author chooses to use
Words are chosen based on: Appearance Sound Meaning

TERM: Syntax The arrangement of words in sentences.

TERM: Tone The writer’s attitude toward his or her audience and subject. An author’s tone can often be described using a single adjective, such as formal or informal, serious or humorous, etc. We can identify an author’s tone by reviewing the diction and syntax used and determining whether the words hold a positive, negative, or neutral connotation.
