4 THE FAFSA Determines eligibility for federal student aid. May also be used to determine state and institutional aid. Requires income information for most recent tax year (2017 for the FAFSA). Calculates financial need based on certain factors, including (but not limited to) income, household size and number in college. EFC (Expected Family Contribution)

5 REQUIRED INFORMATION / DOCUMENTS
Create FSA ID for student and parents (first time) Use previous FSA ID if already created SAVE ID & PASSWORD INFORMATION!!! Income & tax information including 1040 forms, tax return transcripts, W-2s, etc. Untaxed income (child support, interest, etc.) Asset information (cash, checking, savings, investments, etc.) IRS Data Retrieval Tool

6 INDEPENDENT OR DEPENDENT?
To be considered independent on the FAFSA, a student must meet one of the following: At least 24 years old Married Graduate or Professional student Providing support (greater than half) for dependent(s) A veteran or member of the U.S. armed forces Orphan, ward of the court, emancipated minor

7 TIMELINE Starting July 1: Applications Accepted / Apply Texas October 1: FAFSA available / Pursue Scholarships December 1: TTU scholarship deadline Dec - April: TTU financial aid awards sent out June – August: Orientations July – Bill for the fall semester is sent out August – Financial aid disburses 10 days before classes start

If you are receiving numerous s from scholarship searches, set up a scholarship-only account. Research your field of study. Check websites of individuals or companies that are leaders in that field of study. Check websites of major companies for scholarship opportunities. Check with organizations that you or your family may belong to, such as civic groups, churches and employers. Keep your resume, essays and letters of recommendation updated and in an easy-to-access location. SAT / ACT Scores
