EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH Astronomers estimate that the universe contains ten thousand billion billion stars. That’s a 1 with 22 zeroes after it! Even so, those innumerable stars fall into just seven main types. Seven is a much more manageable number than ten thousand billion billion! Whenever you separate something into types or parts, you are classifying it. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

Three Types of Planets People often think all planets are alike, but there are actually three types of planets in the solar system. The terrestrial planets are made of rock and metal and are closest to the sun. These include the midsize planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They rotate slowly and don’t have many moons. Farther from the sun are the planets called gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are called gas giants because they are formed from gases such as hydrogen and helium. Gas giants rotate fast and have many moons. Finally, planetoids are objects made up of rock and ice and are too small to be true “planets.” Planetoids sometimes even get pulled into a planet’s gravitational field and become moons themselves. Whether they are terrestrials, gas giants, or planetoids, the planets in the solar system are fascinating. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH The classification paragraph is a simple way to present the parts of a topic. It begins with a topic sentence that tells what the paragraph will be about. The body sentences that follow present the categories along with specific details about each. Finally, the closing sentence (concluding sentence) wraps up the paragraph. The paragraph classifies the types of “planets” in our solar system. Divide the paragraph by showing topic sentence, body and closing sentence. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

Going to college can be expensive. First, college tuition and room and board can cost anywhere from $2,000 to more than $10,000 per semester. Other expenses make going to college even more expensive. For example, books typically cost between $100 and $500 each term. Second, materials are also very expensive. Paper, notebooks, writing utensils, and other supplies required often cost more at the college bookstore than at any local discount department store. For instance, a package of notepaper costing $2 at a discount store might cost $5 at a college bookstore. Finally, there are all kinds of special fees added onto the bill at registration time. A college student might have to pay a $50 insurance fee, a $20 activity fee, a $15 fee to the student government association and anywhere from $500 to $100 for parking. There is another fee if a student decides to add or drop classes after registration. All in all, the fees required to attend college never seem to end. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH No matter what form an expository paragraph takes, the writer focuses on presenting factual information and being objective. This type of paragraph is usually written from a third-person point of view; however, it you want to use a first-person perspective, that might be okay; but check with your teacher first or consider the reason why you are writing the paragraph. The use of the first-person can be a bit distracting from the subject at hand, and it might reveal a bias. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH Chrissy is my best friend for many reasons. First, she is always helpful. After I had a baby, I was really tired, so she came over to hold Cameron while I took a nap. Also, she is a good listener. Whenever I have a problem she hears my worries and helps me decide what to do. Finally, she is funny! Chrissy always tells the most hilarious jokes that make me laugh. All in all, I couldn’t ask for a better friend than Chrissy. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

The number or power word tells the reader that the writer will present a certain amount of information. Example Topic Sentences that Use Power or Number Words: In the winter, I enjoy doing a variety of winter activities. The new orchestra students learned two ways to improve their playing. Second year students learned several ways to write topic sentences. My friends and I have read many good books this year. NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©

Reasons, Facts, and Details
Definition: The highlighted sentences are the Reasons, Facts, and Details (RFD’s) that support the topic sentence. Transition words are used to let the writer/reader know that a new reason, detail, or fact is being introduced. Expository paragraphs may have two, three, or more RFD’s. Here are some basic transition words, but there are many others that fit special purposes. For example, In spring...In summer...In fall.... In winter... NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©
