3 WWI Map Activity By 1914, the conditions were set up for a global conflict. It was almost too perfect. The European powers had been struggling over control of empires and colonies around the world. Old monarchies and new democracies were ideologically opposed and a complicated system of alliances crisscrossed the European continent and beyond. National pride and militarism was at an all-time high, and war was a popular option from commoners all the way up to the leaders. All it would take was a spark to start the fires of war…

The following 15 steps are representative of major events in the story of World War One, but they are certainly not the only ones. Keep in mind that fighting took place on as many as half-a-dozen ‘fronts’, not to mention various theaters of naval battles. This is but a overview.
