What is Absolute Value? This point is 100 feet above sea level
below sea level In both cases, the number part is 100, but it is either above sea level (positive 100) or below sea level (negative 100). This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND

Integers An Integer is any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4….} The “…” means continues without end. On a number line we represent integers by a point. Positive integers are greater than zero “0” and negative integers are less than zero “0”. Where would the point be for 6 feet above the ground? Where would the point be for 4 feet below the ground? 4 1 2 3 6 5 8 7 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5
4
Graphing Integers To graph an integer on the number line, you draw a point or dot on the line at its location. Graph the set of integers on the number line {-5, 0, 1} {-3, 3, 7} 1 2 3 6 5 8 7 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 4

Absolute Value Numbers that are the same distance from zero on the number line have the same absolute value. The absolute value of a number is the distance between the number and zero on a number line. Evaluate |-5|. -5 is 5 units from zero so |-5| = 5 Evaulate |7| 7 is seven units from zero so |7| = 7 1 2 3 6 5 8 7 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 4
6
Evaluate Absolute Value Expressions
|5| + |4| |5| = 5 and |4| = 4, so = 9 |-6| - |2| |-6| = 6 and |2| = 2, so 6 – 2 = 4 5 - |-3| |-3| = 3, so 5 – 3 = 2 |-11| |3| |-11| = 11 and |3| = 3, so 11 – = = 9
