Uk film distribution
2
What is film distribution?
Film Distribution is when a film company purchases the rights to a film, which then enables that company to sell the film to theatres and to get it out on DVD. Several points have to be considered before the film company purchases the film’s rights, for example if they will get a profit from the film and whether it is worth authorising for it to be made into a DVD if it isn’t going to sell. Independent film companies rely on film councils and other money incomes to support films which are being distributed. Films such as ‘Monsters’ (2010) and ‘Iron Sky’ (2012) are distribution by independent film companies. Independent film companies are mostly British and distribute low budget films. Vertigo Films is one of the most established independent film companies in the UK and to date has distributed a countless amount of well known films.

My film My film would be distributed by an independent film company as it is a low budget film. I have this film low budget due to the different filming techniques and styles I used during the creating of the final product. I have used a prosumer camera as it is easily accessible to most consumers, for example in the film ‘Monster’s which was produced and distributed by independent film company Vertigo Films, they used prosumer cameras. I have filmed with guerrilla style filming as for the majority of the filming process I didn’t actually plan to film at all. For example the one time when I had planned to film the weather conditions were not on my side and I was at a disadvantage. The specific camera angles I had decided to shoot, happened to have the sun directly behind them which would have damaged the quality of my footage had I not had gone with the flow and made the decision to shoot those angles once the sun had moved. There was also other points during the post-production process when I needed to re-film straight away due to actors and editing time.

Who would distribute my film
As I stated in the previous slide, my film is a low budget film therefore it wouldn’t be distributed by a massive film company such as Universal or Lions gate. It is more likely that my film would be distributed by an independent film company such as Vertigo Films.
