First Grade Homework & Classroom News:
Sept 3rd - Sept 7th Word families Words that end in these patterns: -all (ball) -ab (lab) -ax (mad) -ip (rip) -ig (pig) -ell (smell) -em (hem) -om (mom) -ock (rock) -ut (cut) -uff (huff) Homework Menu: Choose one appetizer and one main course to do for homework every night. If you are still hungry for practice, help yourself to some dessert! Appetizer (5 minutes) Practice any of the listed Daily Math skills Write some word family words in a fun way Main Course(15 minutes) Read a “just-right book” to a stuffed animal or a family member for 13 minutes. Spend 2 minutes retelling what you read. Dessert (10 minutes) Write about something that happened today in a journal. Go on to the class website and explore some of the ELA and Math games linked on the Web Resources page. Daily Math skills: Find one more and one less than any number within 25 using a number line write addition sentences within 10 and then write the “flip flop fact- (3+4=7/ 4+3=7) sorting handfuls of items into groups of ten and some more(cereal, pennies, paper clips) Practice writing numbers from 1-120 STEM focus and Words of the week Questions: What makes a strong team? How can you be a strong teammate? Challenges: Work with a team to design and build a 48 inch playdoh maze for a ping pong ball. Words to know: length, measurement, teamwork, compromise, problem solving, communication

August 27th- Aug 31st A note from the teachers… We hope everyone had a great long weekend! We are excited to be continuing our learning with the Engineering Design Process and discussing the importance of teamwork. Students will be working with a team of their peers to plan, design, create, and improve a maze for a ping pong balls. Collaboration is one of the most important yet most difficult skills to master so please ask your kiddos about their projects and their experience working with a team. Our phonics focus for the week is short o but we are continuing to work with all of the short vowel sounds. In math, we are identifying different ways to make numbers within 10 to improve our addition fluency and our number sense.
