1 Opening assignment – Page 41
Use two column notes (LEAVE ROOM UNDER EACH DEFINTION FOR EXAMPLES!!) Find the definitions of mixture, Homogenous mixture Heterogeneous mixture

2 Mixtures A mixture is…..two or more substances mixed together. They can be separated! Think about ketchup…….Ketchup is tiny bits of tomato, seasonings & vinegar. A blob of ketchup………. Still can taste all the seasonings

3 Important!!! In a mixture, each substance keeps its individual properties. Think of mixing salt in water…….. …………its still salty and its still wet!

4 Mixtures What are they? What types of mixtures are there? And how can we separate them???

5 Heterogeneous Mixture
You can see the different parts! Think about a salad. What are the different parts of a salad?

6 Homogeneous Mixtures Substances are evenly mixed.
Think about stirring sugar into a cup of hot tea. You can’t see the sugar but you know it is there.

7 Solution – a homogenous mixture
An well mixed mixture that consists of a solute and a solvent

8 Examples of solutions

9 Examples of solutions Brass Homogeneous mixture of zinc and copper
Stainless steel Solution of chromium, nickel and carbon in iron

10 Air is a homogeneous mixture
Nitrogen - solvent Oxygen Carbon dioxide Water vapor And other gasses

11 Other solutions Colloids
A mixture that contains small undissolved particles that DO NOT settle out TOO Small to be seen--- but big enough to scatter by light Fog Milk mayonnaise, Shaving

12 Using physical properties to separate a mixture

13 Use a magnet

14 Mixtures can be separated we use the different properties they have to separate them!
Unlike compounds!

15 Evaporation

16 Distilling

17 Exit Card Which is a compound, Which is a mixture Which is a element?????
Why?
