Safety memo PPE - What I must remember
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT “Fortunately, I had my helmet!” A victim testifies EDMS December 2018 PPE - What I must remember SAFETY RULE: Always give priority to Collective over Personal Protective Equipment Q. Can you tell us about your accident? R : “ I went into a gallery in order to follow works, performed by contractor`s employees. On my way there, I saw cables crossing my path, positioned at different levels. In order to continue, I had to bend beneath some of them. I had a discussion with the workers and I was heading back, when suddenly my head hit one of the cables. My helmet fell, my head jolted, I`ve lost balance and I fell on the ground. It took me a moment before I was able to stand up, but I was feeling dizzy and I had to sit down again. Nevertheless, I decided to go back to my office. An hour later, I was still in pain and my colleagues took me to the medical center. The doctor explained that the pain was due to the impact, occurred in the gallery. The subsequent radiography confirmed a neck problem and I had 2 weeks of sick leave. ” Q. Did you have the after-effects of your accident? R : “For several weeks, I had neck and back pain with headaches. It took 18 physiotherapy sessions to get better. I also went for additional chiropractic sessions. Currently, I still feel slight pain while moving my head.” Q. Has your accident caused a change in your current behavior? R : “After the accident, I became more careful regarding my working environment. Despite the fact that I do not have any apprehension while working on site, I am obviously much more attentive.” Q. What messages can you convey to your colleagues? R : “Similar risks must be taken into account when designing a building, but also when choosing the positioning of the elements crossing the galleries (pipes, electric cables or others). This risk could have been avoided right from the beginning. Should such risks cannot be removed, collective protections should be put in place (such as foam, or danger and warning signs). I had however reported this dangerous situation by . Since the accident, the problem has been solved.” Do not wait for the accident to occur. For more efficiency, use the accident report (A2) to indicate any dangerous situation! BY LAW Employers have a legal obligation to provide employees with all necessary PPEs. Employees have a legal obligation to wear them LESSONS LEARNT: Individual Protection does not replace good preparation and safety training OBLIGATION: PPE is mandatory. Anyone who does not wear their PPE is liable to penalties WHICH PPE MUST I HAVE TO WEAR ? Accelerators and Experiments LHC Tunnel Mandatory LHC Experimental caverns Upon request LEXGLIMOS (IMPACT) SPS Machine + TI2 + TI8 Linacs, PSB, PS LEIR + TT2 +TT70 - North + East Experimental Areas AD, ISOLDE Technical Buildings and Galleries Check the safety warnings Specific PPE can be requested Analyse your task ! ? WARNING: Usage of some PPE requires training Most of PPE is for personal use Always check the state of your PPE Accident 23rd March Victime 60 years old_ 27 years of experience at CERN Useful Contacts EN safety office: CERN shop :

4 steps to follow to implement PPE
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Impact Probability 1. Evaluate risk Hazard Exposure Risk 2. Put in place priority measures If impossible Suppress risk Collective protection Organizational measures If residual risk Choice of PPE Choice of the provider Order Reception Read notice Try 2. Provide PPE Involved the user Involved the user Write procedure Train employee Check PPE Use Renew 3.Implement PPE Check before and after use + Legal checks Be careful of storage rules If damaged or obsolete
