2 The Electoral College Popular vote- vote of the citizens of a country
Presidents are not elected by popular vote (your vote does not count directly for the president) Elector- one of the people chosen from each state and the District of Columbia who formally select the president and vice president The number of electors matches the number of Congress members in each state

3 The Electoral College Electoral college- group of electors from around the country Electoral votes- votes cast by electors for the president and vice president

4 The Nomination Process
Before becoming a presidential candidate, individuals must win their party’s nomination This happens at their political party’s convention Platform- statement of a party’s views and policies on important issues How does the electoral college work?

5 Vice Presidential Candidates
Vice presidential candidates are usually chosen for their ability to win votes The presidential candidate has the biggest say in deciding who will be the vice presidential candidate
