3. Origin
Islam began with nomadic traders who lived on the Arabian Peninsula
It was spread in Africa via trans-Saharan trade by traders called Berbers
Also spread by military conquest
It spread to West Africa, Spain, and parts of Europe and Asia

4. Basic Principles
Prophet - one who declares publicly a message that one believes has come from God or a god.
In Islam the prophet is Mohammed
Allah is the name of God in Islam
Abraham, Jesus and Moses are also profits in Islam
The holy book is called the Qur’an

5. The 5 Pillars of Islam
Faith - There is only one God, Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.
Prayer - Pray five times a day in the direction of Mecca
Fasting- go w/out food or drink
Must fast from sunup to sundown during Ramadan
Alms - donation to charity. Make yearly alms called a Zakat to the needy.
Pilgrimage-journey to a holy place
Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca

6. Major Branches of Islam
Sunni-Believe leaders of Islam do not have to be related to Mohammed
Shia-(shiite) Believe leaders of Islam must be related to Mohammed.
Muslims do not believe in the separation of church and state
