Chemical and Physical Properties of elements/Families Goal: Identify Trends in the periodic table Predict the number of valence electrons

2 Warm-up Thursday November 2, 2017
Think of your family or a group of friends you hang out with on a regular basis. What properties/traits do you all have in common? In your family- do you have similar genetic traits? Same hair color, eye color, skin tone, etc…? In your family or friends- do you share the same interests? Sports, TV, movies, books, etc…? Thankful Thursday: Pick up a sticky note from your desk and write down one thing you are Thankful for… “I am thankful for ___________ because ________.” You can sign your name or leave it anonymous. Pick up a copy of today’s notes page if you don’t already have it. Fold it in half and glue one side down on page 70 in your science journal

Take a look at your grades, they are posted … you are getting a progress report to take home. Make sure you have ALL missing work with you to complete over the weekend. Answer this question in your journal warm-up section. How can knowing the location of an element in the periodic table help you to identify properties of that element? Notes go on page 70 in your journals. You will be completing these notes as we review common properties of matter within the periodic table. You will need to use color pencils to lightly fill in the different families on the periodic table. Share within your table group!!

5 Families on the Periodic Table
Elements on the periodic table can be grouped into families based on their chemical properties. Each family has a specific name to differentiate it from the other families in the periodic table. 6 Alkali Metals Group 1 Hydrogen is not a member, it is a non-metal
All are metals and solid at room temp 1 Valence Electron Soft and silvery, shiny Very reactive, especially with water Conduct electricity Image:

8 Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 Metals Solids at room temp
2 electrons in the outer shell White, silvery, and malleable Reactive, but less than Alkali metals Conduct electricity

10 Transition Metals Metals Almost all are solids at room temp (Hg)
Good conductors of heat and electricity. 1 or 2 Valence Electrons Less Reactive than Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals Can bond with many elements in a variety of shapes.

12 Rare Earth Metals Some are Radioactive
The rare earths are silver, silvery- white, or gray metals. Conduct electricity

14 Boron Family Group 3 3 electrons in the outer shell Most are metals
Boron is a metalloid Reactive Solid at room temp

16 Carbon Family Group 4 4 electrons in the outer shell
Contains 3 metals, 2 metalloids, and 1 non-metal Carbon (C) Reactivity varies Solids at room temp

18 Nitrogen Family Group 5 5 electrons in the outer shell
Can share electrons to form compounds Contains 2 metals, 2 metalloids, and 2 non-metals Reactivity Varies Nitrogen is the only gas at room temp, rest are solids

20 Oxygen Family Group 6 6 electrons in the outer shell
Contains 2 metals, 1 metalloid, and 3 non-metals Reactive Oxygen is a gas, the rest are solids at room temp

22 Halogens/Halides Group 7 7 electrons in the outer shell
Non-metals, Ts is unknown Very reactive - are often bonded with Group 1 Alkali Metals Has 2 gases, 1 liquid (Br), and 2 solids , Element 117 is Tennessine (Ts) as of July 2016
