1 2010 Science CSCOPE Support
Transition Documents

2 Purpose The 2010 TEKS have brought about many changes to Science Curriculum and planning. This year will be our opportunity to transition into the new requirements. CSCOPE will not have new lessons ready until the start of the school year. The Transition Documents will help you plan CSCOPE lessons that match the new TEKS.

5 Things You Should Know This presentation will model how to plan lessons when implementing the new TEKS Introduction Kinder through 8th grade High School

6 Start with the YAG We will be using 5th grade’s Year at a Glance as an example. The Year at a Glance document tells you which units are to be taught for each six weeks. You can find Year at a Glance documents for 9-week periods at yourdistrict.nerdeveloper.net

7 Now Read the IFD The IFD will be an important document to review before beginning any unit. It will tell you the suggested duration of the lessons. (give or take 2 days) The Rationale will give you researched based information about the understanding of the unit. Misconceptions can be used in the classroom to identify underdeveloped concepts.

8 Continue to read the IFD
The performance indicator is a type of assessment that is to be used after each lesson within the unit. All IFDs list the TEKS that are taught in the lesson and CSCOPE adds specificity to further examine each TEK

10 K – 8 Planning The following pages will provide you with an example on how to plan CSCOPE lessons for Kinder through 8th grade. We will be using 5th grade as an example.

11 Transition Document K – 8
The left hand column of the Transition Document shows you the 2010 TEKS along with specificity in blue. The words in blue are the CSCOPE specificity of the 2010 TEKS

12 Transition Document K – 8
The middle column of the Transition Document shows the old TEKS for comparison. Notice the differences between the 1998 TEKS and the 2010 TEKS

13 Transition Document K – 8
The right hand side column of the transition document will give you the sequence of lesson activities in a 5E model. The Key Understandings and the Performance Indicator from the IFD are shown again Anything written in (green) means that there is a CSCOPE lesson that already exists to meet the new TEKS Use the left hand column of the transition document that provides the 2010 TEKS to verify the specificity of the lessons.

14 Transition Document K – 8
Pull the lesson that you need from the old CSCOPE lessons. The Transition Document may ask you to use parts or the whole old lessons. This lesson was taken from the 2009 CSCOPE 5th grade lessons that are still available on the CSCOPE website.

15 Transition Document K – 8
This document will also provide suggestions for activities and lessons that are new for 2010. Follow the sequence of lesson activities to meet the suggested timeline. For some units there may be very little that can be pulled from 2009 lessons. The Transition Document will help to fill those gaps.

16 Transition Document K – 8
At the end of the lesson you should give your students the Performance Indicator to check for understanding or to be used as a test grade. Be sure to do the Performance Indicator before you move on to the next lesson in the unit. The Performance Indicator is also listed on the IFD Some Units will have more than one Performance Indicator

17 Transition Document K – 8
This where the second lesson within Unit 2 begins. Follow the Sequence of Lesson Events just as you did with the first lesson. After working through one unit of these documents it will be easier to plan your lessons for

19 Transition Document K – 8
The lessons on the right side of this document are suggestions that match the new TEKS. However, you may need to use additional resources to go in depth to meet the rigor of the new TEKS. Refer back to the TEKS and the specificity for clarity on adding additional lesson components. The lesson suggestions on the right side column may not include segments to meet the number days needed for the lesson. Keep this in mind while planning for each unit.

20 High School Lessons using the Science VAD Comparison Tool and the Lesson Reference Document

21 High School VAD Comparison Tool
The left hand column of the Comparison Tool shows the 2010 TEKS along with CSCOPE specificity. Notice the information found on the High School Comparison Tool. The left hand column shows the 2010 TEKS along with the CSCOPE Specificity.

22 High School VAD Comparison Tool
The middle column of the VAD Comparison Tool shows the old TEKS for comparison. The middle column shows the former TEKS for comparison. Be sure to notice whether there has been changes in student expectations (verbs) as well as specific content changes. If you will look through the Comparison Tool, you will also notice that the specific TEK number is not always the same.

23 High School VAD Comparison Tool
Here is an example of a change in TEK number. Notice the numbers circled in BLUE. These indicate similar TEKS – previous Chemistry TEK 8B is similar in content to current TEK 7B. Also notice the change in verbs associated with this TEK. Previously students were to carry out investigations as well as compare and contrast. Now, students are expected to write chemical formulas of varying types of particles and compounds. Students are no longer expected to investigate the differences between ionic and covalent compounds. You may also notice that the types of substances indicated is much more detailed. When you begin to write lessons, this information will be your guide to determine whether or not the OLD CSCOPE lessons are appropriate. **Just a note, the CCRS Notes indicate the TEKS that are part of the College and Career Readiness Standards.

24 High School VAD Comparison Tool
Be sure to watch for the “including” and “such as” words in the TEKS. When “including” is in the TEK, students are expected to meet all of the student expectations listed. When the TEK states “such as” the information that follows is an example.

25 High School VAD Comparison Tool
If there is nothing in the 1998 TEKS square, then the 2010 concept is new. If there is not a 1998 TEK listed next to the 2010 TEK, that means the concept is new. This will require you to use additional resources in writing your lessons. You will need to add lessons that incorporate the new TEK.

26 High School VAD Comparison Tool
The right hand column of the comparison tool will occasionally give additional information Occasionally the last column will have additional notes and FYI type of information.

27 High School Lesson Reference Document
Check the Lesson Reference Document which shows the relationship between the current and former TEKS within each OLD lesson. Remember, the old CSCOPE lessons reference the OLD TEKS (shown in parentheses above). Physics Unit 1 – Laboratory Management (3 days) TEKS to be Covered OLD Lessons w/ NEW(OLD) TEKS 1A Lesson 1, 2days 1A(1A) Lesson 2, 1 day 2J(2C) 2K(2D) 2J 2K Before you begin to write lessons, you may check the Lesson Reference Document which shows the relationship between the current and former TEKS within each of the OLD CSCOPE lessons. The old CSCOPE lessons reference the OLD TEKS. On the Lesson Reference Document, these are shown in parentheses, while the NEW TEKS are not. This document is to help you understand which new TEKS are available in OLD lessons. But remember, this does NOT mean that the new TEK is completely covered in this lesson. With the new TEKS having verb changes and more specificity, you will need to verify that your lessons teach to the new standards.

28 High School Lesson Planning
Look at the Comparison Tool (or IFD) to determine the specific TEKS and which part(s) of the OLD lessons are applicable this year Use parts of old lessons and other resources to write 5E lessons that follow the current TEKS Be sure your lessons reach the depth and complexity of the new TEKS. Once you have gathered the appropriate old lessons, use the Comparison Tool to determine the specific changes in the TEKS and which parts of the lessons will be appropriate to use as is, which parts will need revision, which parts need to be omitted, and which parts will be completely new. For the new parts, use resources as appropriate and plan each lesson according to the 5E model. Be sure to cover all of the TEKS to their appropriate specificity (as listed in the IFD) as well as keeping in line with th e number of days designated for each lesson or unit according to the YAG. **One last thing to remember, check the YAG to determine if parts of the TEK you are working with is going to be taught at a later time in another unit. Along with the IFD, that will help you determine the appropriate parts of each old lesson for each unit.

29 Additional Info Lesson Reference Documents will be updated prior to each 6 weeks Check back when you are working on your next 6 weeks lesson plans Lesson Reference Documents will be available for each 6 weeks period.
