4 Let’s read Matthew 22:34–40 Is it important for us to have love for others? The Jews felt that they were better than the Samaritans.

9 The other "People of Israel"
They hold dual citizenship and speak both Arabic and Hebrew fluently. The small Samaritan community in Nablus sees itself as the custodian of the "true religion of the Israelites“…The Samaritans consider themselves to be the last descendants of this Northern Kingdom. For more than 3,000 years, they have lived in the direct vicinity of Mount Gerizim, which they venerate as a Holy Mountain and a place of God.

10 Luke 17:11–19 11 As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. 12 As he entered a village there, ten lepers stood at a distance, 13 crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy. 15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!”

Eventually it was standard practice for Jews to completely avoid the region of Samaria when traveling to Jerusalem Samaritans were excluded from the Jerusalem Temple, and were therefore considered “foreigners” to the Jews, despite common heritage

14 Application In order to travel down to Jerusalem, Jesus “had to go through Samaria” (John 4:4) Jews and Samarians had a long history of fighting and conflict, and wanting nothing to do with one another

16 Jesus told many stories, or parables, to help people learn the truth.
One day a leader of the Jews asked Jesus what he must do to have eternal life.

17 The Saviour asked him what the scriptures said.
The leader said that a man should love God and also love his neighbour Jesus said that he was right. Then the leader asked, “Who is my neighbour?”

18 There was once a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho.
On the way he was attacked by robbers.

19 They stripped him of his clothes and money, beat him, and left him half dead beside the road.

20 Luckily, a priest happened to be going down the same road,
but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.

21 Next a Temple assistant saw him lying there,
but he also passed by on the other side.

22 Then a Samaritan came along,
When he saw the man's condition, his heart went out to him.

23 Kneeling beside him, the Samaritan cleaned his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him onto his donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.

24 In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper.
"Take good care of him “ he said. "If it costs any more, put it on my bill -- I'll pay you on my way back ."

25 If you want to be like Jesus…
Which of these three do you think did what Jesus would have done? The one who had mercy, of course. If you want to be like Jesus… Then do what Jesus did! Luke 10:30-37

31 What does this story mean?
A parable is a story that has a moral meaning. The Jews considered the Samaritans outcasts; they treated them as enemies and would have nothing to do with them. So when Jesus said the Good Samaritan was the one showing love and being the good neighbour, he meant we should help those in need regardless of race or colour.

32 How can we show our love for Heavenly Father and Jesus?
Let’s read John 13:34–35 & 14:15, 21 Who is your neighbor? Do you think Jesus meant only the people who live close to you?

33 What question was Jesus answering when he told the parable of the Good Samaritan?
Let’s read Luke 10:25, 29

34 Why do you think the Jewish priest and the Levite did not help the wounded Jewish man?
Let’s read Luke 10:31–32

35 What did the Samaritan do for the wounded Jewish man?
Let’s read Luke 10:33–35

36 Why is it significant that it was a Samaritan who helped the Jewish man?

37 What characteristics of a good neighbour did the Samaritan have?
How does this story help us understand who our neighbour is? How can we become better neighbours?

38 Who do you think loved the Lord the most—the priest, the Levite, or the Samaritan?
Why?

39 someone who needs our help? someone who is different from us?
How can we follow Jesus’ teachings and show love for other people? How should we treat: someone who needs our help? someone who is different from us? someone who might have been unkind to us?

40 Have you had an experience when you gave service to someone in need or when you or your family received help from others?

41 When you show love for others by helping and serving them, how do you feel?
Does it make you feel closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus?

42 What great blessing will we inherit if we truly love Heavenly Father and our neighbors?
Let’s read Luke 10:25–28
