What is TELSTAR? http://ctd.grc.nasa.gov/rleonard/regs1ii.html
It has nothing to do with the communications satellite launched in 1962 Telstar was the first active communications satellite, and the first satellite designed to transmit telephone and high-speed data communications. Its name is used to this day for a number of television broadcasting satellites. However, the original, experimental program included just two nearly-identical satellites: "Telstar 1", launched July 10, 1962 and operational until February 21, 1963, and "Telstar 2", launched May 7, 1963 and operational until May 16, 1965.During its time in service, Telstar 1 relayed the first television pictures, telephone calls and fax images through space and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. The record was named after the AT&T communications satellite Telstar, which went into orbit in July The song was released five weeks later on 17 August It was written and produced by Joe Meek, and featured a clavioline, a keyboard instrument with a distinctive electronic sound. "Telstar" won an Ivor Novello Award and is estimated to have sold at least five million copies worldwide. (Wikipedia -

Information Literacy? What about Information Literacy? One of the intended benefits for learners (i.e. our students) is ‘enhancement of information literacy’ The project defines the following Benefits for learners: equality and consistency of service provision across courses and programmes; reduction of time spent on re-creation of bibliographic resources, and reduction of complexity in managing bibliographies; improved efficiency and quality of references created; enhancement of information literacy; support for avoiding plagiarism; improved support for lifelong learning, employability skills and the development of student scholarship; 10

“Information literacy is knowing when and why you need information, where to find it and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner. ” CILIP, ‘Information literacy: definition’, (2009) [online], [20th November 2009]. records information and its sources • organises the content in a manner that supports the purposes and format of the product eg outlines, drafts, storyboards • differentiates between the types of sources cited and understands the elements and correct citation style for a wide range of resources • records all pertinent citation information for future reference and retrieval 4.2 organises (orders/classifies/stores) information • compiles references in the required bibliographic format • creates a system for organising and managing the information obtained eg EndNote, card files 11

Project Aims: To create an exemplar project that seeks to: replace the legacy system, MyOpenLibrary (MOL) with a more robust integrated technical solution for managing library content within the VLE workflow; model more effective bibliographic resource management for the institution and the broader e-learning communities which can ensure efficient, timely and more flexible distribution of these resources; investigate the impact on changing practice for managing bibliographic referencing within e-learning; support the development and application of high quality bibliographic management skills for learning and employability.
