Protestanism THREE BRANCHES
1. LUTHERANISM: Based on teachings of Martin Luther 2. CALVINISM: Based on teachings of John Calvin 3. ANGELICANISM: established by King Henry VIII in England
15
Martin Luther Wanted! Poster
Imagine you are the Pope, leader of the Catholic Church, at the time of the Protestant Reformation. You have been informed of Luther’s teachings and how they challenge the Church. You have asked him to take them back, and he refused. Now, you are excommunicating him, and letting everyone know by creating a Wanted! poster for him. Your poster must have the following: The word Wanted! in large letters across the top A picture (hand drawn and colored!) of Martin Luther A list of at least 3 charges against him The punishment he will face A reward for turning him in For his charges, think about how Luther’s teachings would have been illegal at the time. Think about how they would have challenged the Catholic Church. This should give you good ideas for at least 3 crimes the Church would have charged Luther with.

18
Lutheranism Based on the teachings of Martin Luther Beliefs –
People could win salvation only by faith in God’s gift of forgiveness – faith and “good works” were needed for salvation All church teachings should be clearly based on the Bible All people of faith were equal
19
Calvinism Based on the teachings of John Calvin Calvinists believe –
Men and Women are sinful by nature Humans cannot earn salvation God chooses a very few people to save - these people are called the “elect” God has known since the beginning of time who would be saved - this is called predestination

Anglicanism Church of England Started by Henry VIII
Anglican Church was started by his daughter – Elizabeth I

Anglicanism State church that was created to be accepted by both Catholics and Protestants To please Protestants – priests were allowed to marry and to give sermons in English instead of Latin To please Catholics – priests were allowed to keep their rich, extravagant robes and church services followed catholic traditions

Catholic Reformation Reforming the Church–
Catholic leaders meet at the Council of Trent and agree to several new doctrines (rules) that will be followed by the Catholic Church – 1.
