3. 1) The “cold” sensation comes from menthol, a component of peppermint oil
2) The “heat” sensation depends on channels in nerve cells. They are called ion channels which allow electrically charged sodium and calcium atoms to enter the nerve cell. Signals then travel to different neurons, which the brain and spinal cord decode as “heat”

To send messages to the brain or muscle/gland. They sense a stimulus, send messages to the brain and spinal cord, and then to a muscle or gland to trigger a response.
Neurons are found all over the body. We are made up of approximately 100 billion nerve cells!
The synapse is the gap between the axon terminal and the dendrites. At the synapse, transmitting molecules (neurotransmitters) are sent across the synapse to move from one nerve cell to another.

Directions: Face your partner and watch the video clip you are assigned to. Your partner is to record any observations they see as you watch the video in their packet next to the assigned video clip. After partner #1 has watched the first video clip, switch seats and you are now the observer. Observe your partner as partner #2 watches a video clip. Repeat this until both partners have seen two video clips each.

You were able to read their facial expressiosns. In this activity, we saw that our partner reacted and showed facial expressiosn that allowed you to come to the conclusion that they were expressing a certain emotion. Ex) When you see a person that is sad, you also feel sad.

A neuron that shows an emotion you are seeing. It reflects an emotion that you are seeing by sending a message to the brain, telling you to feel a specific emotion.

4) How is a mirror neuron similar to a reflex? (Hint: One example of a reflex is the movement or “kick” of your leg when a doctor taps your knee/patella tendon)
A reflex is an automatic response; you do not have to think about it. With mirror neurons, you also do not have to think about the emotion being expressed. They both are automatic and produce a response without thinking about it.
