COMPOUNDS OF LIVING THINGS
Chapter 11 – 2 Part 2
2
LIPIDS Lipids are biochemicals that do not dissolve in water.
Fats, oils, and wax are lipids.
3
What are they? Lipids are made mostly of carbon and hydrogen.
They form long chains of carbon atoms.
4
Saturated Fats Saturated fats are lipids that have only a single bond between the carbon atoms. These provide less energy and are more easily layered causing plaque to build up in the arteries and veins.
5
Plaque build up in veins
UNSATURATED FATS These are lipids that have double and single bonds between carbon atoms. Plaque build up in veins
6
More About Lipids Plants store lipids as oils.
Animals store lipids as fats. When organisms use up carbohydrates, they use lipids as energy. Lipids are also used to store some vitamins.
