Local before 1806 (with areas under feudal system) Northern provinces used patronymics Eastern provinces used name of the farm Catholic church dominated Widely respected religious freedom Jews, Huguenots, Mennonites After 1806 – (Conquered by French in 1806 – expelled in 1813) Used Hereditary surname. Children's names purchased from state If a child died, the next child would often be given the same name. Huwelijksbijlagen ( marriage supplements) are documents provided by bride & groom proved identity and marriage eligibility, occupation, parents, etc. 2/19/2019
