1 Monday Morning Message
Our Voice. Our Schools. Our Children Monday Morning Message ESESECONDARYVE_SEPT 24, 2018

2 Instructional Look-fors
Support Facilitators should be actively engaged in… a. the delivery of whole group instruction, presenting a learning strategy or technique b. leading small group instruction c. re-teaching concepts to an individual or small group of student You should NOT observe… a. grading of papers or performing clerical tasks for the classroom teacher b. simply prompting student to work on task or only redirecting behaviors, if they arise It is crucial that the SF plan for and deliver instruction, not perform tasks of a paraprofessional.

3 Procedural Look-fors FTE Day Certain is Friday, October 12

The Best Practices for Inclusive Education self-assessment process (or BPIE) is required by FLORIDA STATUTE SECTION (1)(F) to support the implementation of inclusive practices for students with disabilities. Each school district and school shall complete a BPIE with a Florida Inclusion Network (FIN) Facilitator or an individual trained by FIN to facilitate a BPIE. This process is required for public and charter schools and districts. Duval County Public schools completed its second round District BPIE in January of 2018 and is now working with the Florida Inclusion Network and FDLRS Crown to assist schools with completing the BPIEs.

5 Weekly Tip to Avoid Legal Pitfalls *Service Animals
There are only two questions that may be asked and answered when a request to allow a student to bring his or her service animal to school is made: 1) whether the student for whom the request is made is an individual with a disability; and 2) whether the service animal meets the definition of “service animal” under the law. A student determined to be a student with a disability under the IDEA or Section 504 would be an individual with a disability. [U]nless the animal is individually trained to do something that qualifies as work or a task, the animal is a pet or support animal and does not qualify for coverage as a service animal. A pet or support animal may be able to discern that the individual is in distress, but it is what the animal is trained to do in response to this awareness that distinguishes a service animal from an observant pet or support animal.
