Monday, November 24, 2014 ENTRY TASK: Journal Entry Now that you’ve looked closely at evidence, came up with rules (reasoning), and made claims on whether or not Queenie’s testimony is true… What are THREE NEW words that come to mind? Tuesday, November 25, 2014 Today’s Objectives: We will…
We found Arthur Velasquez lying at the bottom of the main stairs on his back, face-up, his feet on the third step. He was still holding a glass in the fingertips of his left hand. His clothes were neat. Nothing on the wall besides the stairs was disturbed. The carpet where he lay was undisturbed. Queenie stated that “Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs. He was coming down for another drink.” We believe the evidence does NOT support her claim. Firstly, the cup is in his hand. As a rule when people fall down the stairs, they let go of what they are holding to try and get a grip of something to stop their fall. Secondly, the way Arthur is facing is strange. When someone falls down the stairs, their body should be facedown; however, Arthur is lying face-up. Third, Queenie waited to call the police/ambulance. She waited for her friends to do anything. When someone sees another person hurt, as a general rule they automatically call for help. Fourth, the items on the wall are all straight and undisturbed. If someone falls down the stairs, as a rule they are likely to try to hold on to something or try to find something to break their fall. In conclusion, we believe Queenie’s testimony is FALSE because the amount of evidence points to holes in her testimony. The evidence does NOT support what she is saying. What’s this person’s CLAIM? (What argument are they trying to make?) Is their EVIDENCE solid and unrefutable or “unarguable”? Is their REASONING (rules) also solid? Why or why not? Today’s Objectives: We will… …understand Contrasting Body Paragraph Topic Sentences/Claims. …work on our Body Paragraphs. Homework: Finish drafting Body Paragraphs 1, 2, 3, and 4 Other: Tutorial Room 2309.
