Fingerspelling Guidelines:
Always use your Dominant Hand! Do not bounce, pulse, or twist your hand. Your hand must face out (to your audience). Do not open up your hand between each letter. When you make a mistake, don’t “erase” it in the air, sign “mistake.” Watch for a slight pause that indicates a separation of words. Keep your arm at a comfortable place resting at your side. Do not stick your arm out or in someone’s face. Relax – loosen your shoulders.
30
Guidelines Cont. As you FS move your hand slightly away from you. (NOT A BIG MOVEMENT!) Hold the last letter of your word to show you are done. Do not mouth the fingerspelled word, unless not commonly used or a really long word. When fingerspelling, focus on clarity and not speed. **I’d rather you be neat and slow, than sloppy and fast!**
31
When watching someone fingerspell:
When watching someone fingerspell: 1. The key to learning to read fingerspelling successfully is to look at the WHOLE WORD - Focus on the shape of the word and not each letter being produced. Don’t say M-A-R-K-E-T, say Market as you are seeing it signed. 2. Practice reading the more frequently used letter combinations and function words that are often fingerspelled. (ate, tion, ly, able, ment, ing) (it, be, am, are, was, is, but, the) 3. Watch for the First letter of a fingerspelling word, notice the _Last letter_ (usually held briefly) and any letters that stand out (B,F,H,J,V,W,Y, Z). This is called Configuration. Then use the other 2 C’s to determine the word. Context Closure

Lexicalization Lexicalization means that the way a word is spelled is different from the normal spelling. A lexicalized word that is FS, actually looks more like a sign rather than a FS word. Lexicalized words are FS but something is different about how they are FS. Some signs (1) changed/added movements, (2) palms face in/down/up, or (3) drop letters. When you see a lexicalized sign glossed it is shown with a # before it. ex. #ASL, #POOL, #BANK, #BACK, #MALL **DO NOT JUST PUT A (#) IN FRONT OF A WORD. ONLY CERTAIN WORDS ARE LEXICALIZED**

49
What does ASL glossing look like?
ASL is Glossed in ALL CAPITAL letters. This line explains the type of sentences. ASL does not use “is” like English ___________y_____________ MY NAME (fs) BARBARA Shows that something is fingerspelled No English punctuation You may also see this done with dashes. B-A-R-B-A-R-A

ASL : _________Y_____________ MY ROOM I NEED CLEAN I Time-Topic-Comment: Time than topic than the comment about the topic. English: I cleaned my room yesterday. ASL : __________Y______________ YESTERDAY MY ROOM I CLEAN I
