2 Continental Congress Group of men who met in Philadelphia to draft the Declaration of Independence Later met to write the Articles of Confederation Called upon again to re-write the Articles then decided to write new document – The Constitution of the United States of America

Fought in French & Indian War General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution Creator of the US’s first “CIA” Chosen by Continental Congress to serve as America’s first President ( )

4 Thomas Jefferson Self-taught Lawyer
Primary author of the Declaration of Independence 3rd President of the United States of America

5 Colonel Elijah Clarke Leader of the Georgia Militia
Led GA Militia to their first victory at the Battle of Kettle Creek Clarke County (Athens, GA) named in his honor

6 Austin Dabney Slave who fought in place of his elderly owner
He helped save Col. Elijah Clarke when Clarke’s horse was shot out from under him Wounded in battle Later recognized as soldier, awarded land and soldier’s pension Blacks not allowed to own land or receive pensions, his heroism gained recognition

7 Battle of Kettle Creek First win for the GA Militia over a much larger British force. Gained much needed supplies and horses from British forces Guns, gun powder, etc… Proved to GA loyalists that they did not have much support to remain a colony

8 Siege of Savannah French forces, aided by Haitian soldiers attempted to help the GA Militia gain control of Savannah from British Forces Siege lasted less than an hour and was a failure 1000 French/Haitian and Patriot deaths, 18 British deaths Savannah remained under British Control until the end of the America Revolution in 1783

9 Nancy Hart A rumored spy for the Patriots
Supposedly fought at the Battle of Kettle Creek Allegedly killed Redcoats who were in her home, bragging about killing one of her neighbors Hart County & Lake Hartwell named for her Only county of Georgia’s 159 named for a woman
