2 In the constitution 13th Amendment (1864): abolished slavery in all of U.S. AND territories 14th Amendment (1868): citizenship for everyone born in the U.S. Protects the rights of everyone equally Includes former slaves 15th Amendment (1870): gave African American men the right to vote

4 Question to consider With your table discuss: After the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed, do you think former slaves were welcomed into Southern society?

5 vocabulary Segregation: the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment Jim Crow: refers to a series of racist laws and measures that discriminated against African- Americans. Even though these laws were enacted between 1876 and 1965 Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior

Laws were passed to separate whites and blacks Businesses discriminated against African Americans and forced them out of communities Often there was violence
