1 Focus 3 October 3-10 What is matter? What is atomic theory? (long answer--need lots of space)

2 Matter and energy have properties and behaviors that can be studied.
1. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. EVERYTHING in the universe is made of matter . . . or energy. Matter and energy have properties and behaviors that can be studied.

3 This is why there are no ghosts.

4 Chemistry is the study of matter.

5 #2. Atomic Theory

6 A.

7 B. Atoms cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed in ordinary chemical reactions. But these changes CAN occur in nuclear reactions!

8  c. All atoms of an element have the same mass, which is unique to that element.
(unique - the only one of its kind; unlike anything else)

9 D. Atoms of any one element have a completely different set of properties than atoms of another element.

10 e. An atom is the smallest unit of matter which has all of the unique traits of the matter itself

11 f. Atoms are made of smaller particles. They are called…
Subatomic particles sub- smaller than; below, beneath

12 protons and neutrons are tiny particles found together in the center of an atom called the nucleus.

13 a proton has a positive electrical charge – p+. (symbol)
One proton weighs 1 amu. amu = atomic mass unit P+

14 a neutron has no electrical charge-- n0
a neutron has no electrical charge-- n0. A neutron also has an atomic weight of 1 amu. P+ n0

15

16 Electrons are SOOOO tiny, they have no amu
Electrons are SOOOO tiny, they have no amu. They have a negative charge and are written e-. P+ e - .

17 These are models of what atoms might look like and can help you understand atomic structure. They do NOT look like any of these.
