2 Registration / Residence Permits & Obtaining Finnish ID number
Every foreign person staying in Finland for more than three months (=90 days) must: register at the local police station (& obtain a Finnish ID number) b1) obtain a residence permit (in general valid for 6 / 12 months!) => remember to extend the permit (esp. degree students)! b2) and, if necessary, obtain a Finnish ID number at a Register Office Guidance on permits / registration Police (poliisi.fi) Register’s Office (maistraatti.fi) Finnish Immigration Service (migri.fi) Embassies (formin.fi) Admissions and Mobility Services University of Vaasa | Admissions and Mobility Services | Residence Permits

3 A) Registration at the local police station
Citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland residence permit not needed free to reside and work in Finland for up to three months (=90 days) Both exchange and degree students: The right of residence must be registered before the end of the three-month period Registration at the local police (poliisi.fi) Finnish ID number received upon registration Present your Finnish ID number to the International Education Specialist (Tiina / Katariina) University of Vaasa | Admissions and Mobility Services | Residence Permits

Registering the right of residence at the local police: EU registration form national proof of identity or passport proof of being registered with a Finnish educational institution (Certificate of attendance) A registration is valid until further notice University of Vaasa | Admissions and Mobility Services | Residence Permits

6 B1) Obtaining a residence permit & extending permit
Non-EU/EEA countries If stay exceeds three months: residence permit required Permit obtained before arrival in Finland! Student’s permit is a temporary permit => Duration of the studies, maximum one year at a time Extension to a residence permit Enrolled as attending for the time of permit extension (Enrollment annually from June) Full-time studies and required courses completed University of Vaasa | Admissions and Mobility Services | Residence Permits

7 B1) Obtaining a residence permit & extending permit
The application for an extension to residence permit is submitted to the local police station Application form Certificate of Attendance and Transcript of Records (from the Admissions and Mobility Services => remember to request at least 1 week earlier!) Financing the stay Valid insurance, Passport sized photos, etc. Book an appointment beforehand! 8 B1) Obtaining a residence permit & extending permit
Check your Finnish ID number on the back side of your residence permit => exchange students inform the International Education Specialist Katariina Rinta, degree students inform Tiina Rolser Exchange students: getting a Finnish ID Number is compulsory, tutors will help University of Vaasa | Admissions and Mobility Services | Residence Permits

9 B2) Obtain a Finnish ID number at a Register Office
If your Finnish ID number is missing from your RP card, please obtain the number from the Register Office! 10 Registration at the Register Office
Home Municipality Staying in Finland on “permanent basis” (i.e. at least two years -> degree students) Staying in Finland on “temporary basis” -> exchange students Finnish ID Number Given to a foreign citizen whose residence in Finland is permanent, exceeds one year (degree students) or for temporary basis (exchange students).
