1 The Circulatory System
November 3rd, 2008

2 Circulatory System quick-facts (Write these quick-facts in your interactive notebook)
ARTERIES are vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. VEINS are vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. Blood CIRCULATES--circles--all around your body in about one or two minutes. Inside the heart are four hollow chambers. Each chamber is a little pump. The pumping pushes blood all around your body.

3 The Heart

4 Your Body as a City (Copy this information onto the worksheet given to you in class)
All cities have different types of roadways. Highways, major city streets, and smaller neighborhood streets. If you think of your body like a city, your circulatory system is like the roadways of your body. Whenever a chemical, nutrient, or waste product needs to get to another part of your body, it hitches a ride on your blood stream until it reaches it’s final destination.

5 The arteries and veins leading directly from your heart are like the highways. These highways have “exits” all over them which are smaller versions of arteries and veins. These are like the major city streets of your body. Leading to and from these major “streets” are capillaries, which are like the smaller neighborhood streets and alleys of your body. Along these roadways travel all the chemicals, nutrients, and waste of your body. Arteries (red) and Veins (blue) Capillaries Blood vessels

6 The Circulatory System and the…
Digestive System When you eat, nutrients from your food pass through the walls in your intestine and into your blood stream, where they are carried to the rest of the cells in your body.

7 The Circulatory System and the…
Endocrine System When hormones need to get to various parts of your body, they are released by glands in your endocrine system and travel through your blood stream to their destination.

8 The Circulatory System and the…
Respiratory System When you breath in, oxygen goes into your lungs where it is transferred into your bloodstream and taken to all the cells in your body. At the same time, carbon dioxide in your cells gets transferred into your bloodstream and back into your lungs for you to breath out.

9 The Circulatory System and the…
Excretory System All of your cells produce waste products that are toxic to your body. All waste is sent to your bloodstream where it is take to your kidneys to be filtered and eventually sent to your bladder for removal from your body.

10 The Circulatory System and the…
Nervous System Your brain needs a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood from the circulatory system in order to function properly. In addition, hormones from you endocrine system also travel to your brain cells through your circulatory system.

All cities have different types of __________________. __________________, major __________ streets, and smaller _______________________ streets. If you think of your body like a city, your ____________________ ________________ is like the ____________________ of your body. Whenever a _________________, ________________, or _______________ ______________ needs to get to another part of your body, it hitches a ride in your blood stream until it reaches it’s final destination. The _____________ and ___________ leading directly from your heart are like the ________________. These highways have “exits” all over them which are smaller versions of ____________ and ___________. These are like the______________ _________ streets and ____________ of your body. Finally, leading to and from these major “streets” are ______________, which are like the smaller ____________________ streets of your body. Along these roadways travels all the chemicals, nutrients, and waste of your body. Complete the table below to see exactly how each body system uses the circulatory system. Put the information from the slides into the long boxes at the right next to each system. and the Digestive System Endocrine System and the and the Respiratory System Circulatory System and the Excretory System and the Nervous System
