Lab Exercise 5 Classification of Tissues: Connective Tissue
Connective Tissue: a tissue that supports, transports, binds, and protects structures in the body
2
Types of Connective Tissue
3
I will use BOTH microscopes AND diagrams to test you on connective tissues. Make sure you look at the microscopes in lab and the diagrams in this presentation and in class.
4
Make sure you know all the pieces of information listed in your notes organizer. Also know the locations of ALL tissues!
5
Bone Description: Hard matrix made of collagen fibers and calcium salts, Bone cells (osteocytes) found in lacunae Function: Protection and support bone, x.s., which is a specialized form of connective tissue in which the extracellular components are mineralized, producing a hard, relatively rigid matrix. The matrix contains numerous collagen fibers which are impregnated with calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate salts.
6
Bone Haversian systems run lengthwise through the bone
Each Haversian system is nearly a round area, the central core is called the Haversian canal. Blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves that supply the tissue run through the Haversian canal. Around the canal is the matrix, laid down in concentric layers called lamellae. The lamellae have small holes (lacunae) where the bone cells are located.
7
Bone Find: Haversian Canal, Nuclei of Osteocyte in lacunae and Lamellae
8
Cartilage: Hyaline
9
Cartilage: Hyaline Find: Lacuna, Chondrocyte

14
Dense Connective: Regular
15
Dense Regular Connective Tissue Ligaments & Tendons –
16
Dense Connective Tissue: Dense Regular CT Find: Collagen fibers, Nuclei of fibroblasts
18
Connective Tissue: Dense Irregular (Skin Dermis)
19
Connective Tissue: Dense Irregular
RD: dense irregular connective tissue, is important in giving the skin it overall strength and elasticity, as well as housing other important epithelial derived structures such as glands and hair follicles. PD: loose connective tissue
20
Dense Connective Tissue: Dense Irregular CT Find: collagen fibers, nuclei of fibroblasts
21
Loose Connective: Areolar Tissue
22
Loose Connective Tissue: Areolar Tissue Find: matrix/ground substance, collagen fibers, elastic fibers, nuclei of cells
23
Loose Connective Tissue: Adipose Tissue
24
Loose Connective Tissue: Adipose Tissue Find: adipocyte, lipid droplet, nucleus of an adipocyte
25
Loose Connective: Reticular Tissue
Description: Delicate reticular fibers w reticular cells Function: Forms internal framework supporting blood cells Location: Lymphoid Organs
26
Loose Connective: Reticular
Find: Reticular Fibers, Blood cells
27
Blood (Vascular Tissue)
Description: fluid matrix (blood plasma), fibers only seen during clotting, cells suspended in matrix Function: Transportation
28
Blood Find: Red Blood Cell, White Blood Cell
