LET’S TAKE A LOOK BACK AT OUR LESSON LAST WEEK.. SENSORY EXPERIENCES BASED ON OUR FIVE SENSES CREATIVE LANGUAGE MAKES A TEXT INTERESTING AND FUN TO READ.

ACTIVITY 1: FIGURE IT OUT! FORM GROUPS OF FIVE YOU WILL BE ASSIGNED WITH A FIGURE OF SPEECH. THE DEFINITION AND EXAMPLES ARE PROVIDED BUT THE CHALLENGE IS FOR YOU TO PIECE THEM TOGETHER SINCE THEY ARE JUMBLED. ASSIGN A REPORTER,A DISCUSSION LEADER, A SECRETARY AND THE REST WILL BE CONTRIBUTORS IN YOUR GROUP. THE GROUP REPORTER WILL PRESENT THE FIGURE OF SPEECH, ITS DEFINITION AND THE EXAMPLES AS WELL AS THE INTERPRETATION DO THIS TASK IN 5 MINUTES.

Alliteration- a literary device in which a series of words begin with the same consonant sound

EXAMPLES OF ALLITERATION Sheep should sleep in a shed. I saw a saw that could out saw any other saw I ever saw.

Metaphor – a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn't literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.

EXAMPLES OF METAPHOR All the world’s a stage. Love is a battlefield.

SIMILE – a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid

EXAMPLES OF SIMILE She’s as cute as a button. Life is like a box of chocolates.

Hyperbole –a figure of speech that uses extreme exaggeration to make a point or show emphasis. It is the opposite of understatement.

EXAMPLES OF HYPERBOLE I’m so hungry I could eat a horse. If I can’t buy that perfect prom dress, I’ll die!

OXYMORON –a figure of speech containing words that seem to contradict each other.

POINTS TO PONDER: Figures of speech are meant to clarify and describe in more detail. They are the special tools of our language, and as such, should be handled with care.

ACTIVITY 2: EACH GROUP WILL RANDOMLY PICK A FIGURE OF SPEECH TRY TO LOOK FOR THIS FIGURE OF SPEECH FROM THE LYRICS OF “BLANK SPACE” BY TAYLOR SWIFT. YOU ARE GIVEN 3 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THIS TASK. THE SECOND GROUP REPORTER WILL PRESENT YOUR OUTPUT AND GIVE YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE MEANING OF THE FIGURES OF SPEECH LISTED.
