East Africa Continuity: Trade Networks Change: Religion Why: Trade started in Swahili on the East coast of Africa. Essential Goods were traded such as gold, ivory, and slaves. The Indian Ocean Trade allowed East Africa to reach many parts of the world including China. East Africa provided incentives for Indian Ocean commerce. Why: Religion in East Africa started as polytheism but has changed to become more monotheistic Some suggest that monotheism first arose in the religion of Zoroastrianism. Others have argued that Egypt was the birthplace of monotheism. Even then, they have kept changing like from Christianity to Islam. Change: Swahili Unification Why: Between 1000 and 1500 the Swahili coast had no imperial system or larger territorial states. Later the swahili coast created unified city states. The Swahili were groups of different people who came together near the coast. Their culture was influenced by Middle Eastern, Indian, Persian and Portuguese cultures Key Civilizations: Meroe, Axum, Swahili Coast, and Egypt.
