In aged mice (top), HSCs accumulate but exhibit skewed patterns of differentiation, favoring more production of myeloid cells at the expense of B lymphocytes. This effect is at least partially mediated by osteoblast niche cell production of IGF-1. When exposed to soluble factors from young mice (bottom), the impact of IGF-1 is overcome, HSC accumulation is dampened, and the ratio of B cell: myeloid cell production is recovered.
