Here’s an illustration of what we mean when we say to engage in the “But Why?” process.
The identified problem is stated in the middle and the group begins asking “BUT WHY” does this problem exist to help uncover the root causes. Each time a reason is given, you ask “but why” again. We recommend that you probe at least two layers deep in order to hit upon some root causes or SDH
One thing you immediately see through this process is that we know that it takes more than just one approach to solve a problem. There are MANY DIFFERENT CAUSES to any problem - therefore MANY DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS are required to solve it.
