1 Trans affirmation, Inclusion and equity on campus
A strategy

2 History Thank you for all the work everyone in this room has done
You gave me the freedom to live my life as it is today You set the stage for even better lives for those who come after us

3 Who is the Audience of this presentation?
Trans people (Includes intersex, agender, non-binary, genderqueer and others) Allies (trans people may not always be able to lead) People in leadership positions

4 Objectives Strategy Matters
You need to have an objective plan to move create a more inclusive, affirming institution This will not be the same across institutions Identify goals Develop a plan Train leaders Measure Progress Students should leave the university as allies that will help transform other workplaces Research can influence government, health, educational, and workplace policies to be more affirming

5 Strategy Guide Don’t work alone. Engage others. If you can start a project and other people take over, that is perfect Develop leaders who can act independently and give them the resources they need to do so. Now is the time to make progress. People are driven to help and looking for ways to make a difference. Change comes slow to universities. This will protect our community from political tides.

6 Intersectionality Transgender and genderqueer people come from all religions, races, abilities, orientations Leverage this: Bring queer trans speakers of color to campus Team up with affirming religious groups to offer programming Single use ADA Bathrooms satisfy needs of the trans and non-binary community There are trans immigrants in cages in Texas - That fight is our fight. Average lifespan of a transgender person of color is 31 – Black Lives Matter – That fight is our fight. Trans people use planned parenthood – That fight is our fight

7 University obstacles Assessment / Metrics
Individual CIS-Het Fear – Translates into institutional micro and macro aggression Inertia – Maintains the status quo that leaves trans people marginalized University’s vision of self Money Building Space Time Staff Perception – too hard/impossible Legal Limitations – building codes, future bathroom bills

8 Strategy There is no one way to be an activist nor one form of activism. Find your space! You can make a difference!
