2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined
Air is a mixture Mixtures 2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined
2
2 types of mixtures (Homogeneous or heterogeneous)
*not well mixed *does not appear the same throughout. easily separated by physical means (filtering, magnets) Examples: fruit salad, vegetable soup, Granite}
3
2) Homogeneous Mixture Appears the same throughout Is well mixed
can be separated by physical means EX: milk, air, suntan lotion, paint, clouds, lemonade
4
Types of Homogeneous mixtures
A) solutions B) colloids C) suspensions
6
A) Solutions When one substance dissolves in another
2 parts solute and a solvent *solute is the substance that is dissolved *solvent substance that does the dissolving
7
Alloys Metal solutions EX:
Sterling silver is silver with small amounts of Copper dissolved in it Stainless Steel is iron and chromium
8
B) Colloids Colloids are solutions. They can be described as a substance trapped inside another substance. They can be identified by their characteristic scattering of light. do not separate on standing Mixed together but not dissolved EX:Milk is a colloid of butter fat globules dispersed within a water based liquid
9
c) Suspensions The size of the particles is great enough so they are visible to the naked eye. Blood and aerosol sprays are examples of suspensions.
