1 Irony: Verbal, Situational, Dramatic

2 Verbal Irony You say the opposite of what you mean.
Ex: You get into a wreck and the passenger says, “You’re a great driver!”

3 Situational Irony A situation ends in the opposite way of what is expected Ex: A lifeguard is saved from drowning.

4 Dramatic Irony The audience knows something that the characters do not. Ex: In a horror movie, the terrified boy runs to hide in the closet…and the audience just saw the bad guy is hiding in the closet!

Jamie breaks a date with his girlfriend to go to a baseball game with friends. At the concession stand, Jamie sees his girlfriend with another guy. Situational Irony

Your date for the school dance shows up in ripped jeans and a stained t-shirt. With a smirk, you say, “Oh! I see you dressed up for the occasion.” Verbal Irony

The talk show host announces to the audience that on today’s show each guest will be reunited with a long lost love. The guests, however, think they are on the show because they won a prize. Dramatic Irony
