Reliable journeys – users want to get to their intended destination more or less when they think that they will
Disruption, planned and unplanned
Planned works - Deliver improvements with the user in mind
Unplanned incidents – the need for useful information
Well managed – work harder to free trapped traffic
Road user welfare

Delivering the basics
Good quality, well maintained road surfaces – the highest priority for road users
Perception linked to safety – faster roads with high volumes of traffic seen to be less safe if the road has defects
Road signs, free of defects, overgrown branches and clean
All linked to the need for high levels of customer service

4. Key issues for road users
Freight / coach
Sometimes feel less well treated, looking for improvements in roadworks planning, communication and rest facilities
Motorcyclists
Feel vulnerable on faster, busier roads with other road user types
Road surface quality a particular issue
Cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians
Important that their needs are considered for both using, and crossing the strategic road network
Need provision for them incorporated at the outset of scheme design, rather than making adaptations later
