1
Learn to solve equations with integers.
2
Adding and Subtracting to Solve Equations
Steps: 1 Find the variable (letter) 2. Circle the number next to the variable 3. Do the OPPOSITE of what that number is to BOTH of the numbers on each side of the equal sign
3
Additional Example 1A & 1B: Adding and Subtracting to Solve Equations
Add 3 to both sides. x = – 3 x – = – 3 Commutative Property B. 5 + r = 9 5 + r = 9 r = 9 - 5 Subtract 5 from both sides. r = 4
4
Solve. C. –6 + n = 8 Add 6 to both sides. –6 + 6 + n = 8 + 6 n = 14 D.
Additional Example 1C & 1D: Adding and Subtracting to Solve Equations Continued Solve. C. –6 + n = 8 Add 6 to both sides. – n = 8 + 6 n = 14 D. z + 6 = 2 z + 6 = 2 –6 Add –6 to each side. z = -4
5
Solve. A. B. p – 7 = – 4 p – 7 = – 4 p – 7 + 7 = – 4 + 7
Try This: Example 1A & 1B Solve. A. p – 7 = – 4 p – 7 = – 4 p – = – 4 + 7 Add 7 to both sides. p = 3 p – = – 4 Commutative Property B. –2 + g = -2 –2 + g = -2 – g = Add 2 to both sides. g = 0
6
Subtract 1 from both sides 1 - 1 + r = -7 - 1
Try This: Example 1C & 1D Solve. C. 1 + r = -7 Subtract 1 from both sides r = r = -8 How many total negatives. D. a + 9 = 8 a + 9 = 8 –9 Add –9 to each side. a = –1
