Warm-up: Friday, 10/30/15 List and explain one area of the French Revolution that you feel you fully understand. What is one area of the French Revolution that you are unclear on?

1) France is set up into three estates. The First and Second Estates (Nobles and clergy) had privileges, including access to high offices and exemptions from paying taxes, that were not granted to the members of the Third Estate (commoners). 2) New Enlightenment ideas of equality, liberty, and democracy, along with the American Revolution began inspiring the people of France. 3)Population doubled, food shortages, and government sank deeper into debt. Women riot over the price of bread.

4) Third Estate met at the National Assembly and pledge an oath (Tennis Court Oath) to draft a new Constitution. 5)Rumors flew that the King was ordering mercenary guards to massacre French citizens so the people stormed the Bastille Prison to get gunpowder. 6)Rebellion spreads to the countryside where the peasants burned houses and attacked the nobles (The Great Fear).

7) The National Assembly adopts The Declaration of the Rights of Man (based on The American Declaration of Independence). 8)France goes to war with Austria and Prussia. 9) The radical group called The Jacobins establish the Committee of Public Safety and jail King Louis. The King is beheaded in the guillotine.

13) Napoleon takes control of The Directory through a coup.
14) Napoleon restores order by setting up schools, stable economy, and Napoleonic Code which gives the people equality. 15) Napoleon makes himself Emperor and conquers most of Europe.

16) Napoleon puts up blockade called The Continental System against Britain but his plan ultimately backfires. 17) Napoleon goes through Spain to try to get to Portugal. Napoleon overthrows the King of Spain and fights the Peninsular War (guerilla war).

18) Napoleon invades Russia but is forced to retreat due to the approaching cold winter.
19) Napoleon’s enemies join forces and defeat him, forcing him to give up his thrown and put into exile on a small island named Elba.

Homework List the 4 parts of the revolution (Think the different sections of your comic strips you are creating). Write a one paragraph summary of each of the 4 parts (4 paragraphs total).
