1 M1/M2 BUOY DATA: OCEAN TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS
LT WENDY TOWLE

2 OBJECTIVES Utilizing ocean temperature data obtained from M1 and M2 buoys, investigate any annual or seasonal variations in the Monterey Bay area. Discern any differences between the data sets themselves Try one more time to learn something about MATLAB!

16 M1/M2 OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
General trend of warmer temperatures in the winter and colder temperatures in the summer, makes sense due to coastal upwelling being stronger in the summertime. On the average, 78% of the variability of the ocean is occurring in the 1st principal component.

17 M1/M2 OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
M1 shows slightly cooler temperatures in the upper 80m than M2. Standard deviation plot shows M1 having much stronger variability than M2 as its not as stratified. Mid 1990’s saw a gradual later onset of upwelling, then El Nino disrupted pattern. As expected, higher geopotential anomalies are seen in the wintertime due to warmer temperatures and vice versa.

18 M1/M2 OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
M1 lies over a stronger upwelling region than M2 resulting in greater sensitivity to changes in the upwelling regime while M2 lies at the eastern edge of the California Current and is much less affected. Wind reversals in the bay can result in onshore advection of the warmer offshore water into the cooler inshore water decreasing the effects of upwelling.

19 M1/M2 OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
The longer these studies are conducted, the greater chance of determining any large scale features such as global warming and predicting events such as El Nino. Learned a ton about upwelling and how difficult it can be to work with enormous amounts of data that may not be complete and finally getting it into the form you want to present it in.
