2 Progress to Date It is generally accepted that all students should be included in school accountability programs but now we need to find the best methods of teaching and measuring academic progress for students with significant cognitive disabilities (Martha Thurlow) The questions have changed from “why” to “how.” Special educators, curriculum experts, and measurement experts can now sit in the same room (& even understand each other)

3 Measurement Challenge
For some formats it is difficult to accept all aspects of psychometric theory underlying our statistical approaches to the quality of AA-AAS but… Still need quality controls that honor the central values of honesty, defensibility, and fairness in reporting student’s scores

4 Bigger Challenge Conceptual models for academic learning
One model has been proposed for literacy (Browder, et al., in press) Need for empirical research Opportunity to learn Teacher professional development Instructional strategies Resources Differentiation across grades
